Chapter Thirteen

Something was amiss surrounding the mysterious Lady, but William could not place what it was. Even the partner who had accompanied her to dinner at the home of Lord Tearson added to the enigma. Lord Tearson’s words concerning having the woman at his side did little to unravel his tangled mind. Was Lady not already his partner?

Perhaps the man meant it in a more intimate sense. The removal of her current partner left William unsure what to do.

Of course, he would not harm the man. William had yet seen any wrongdoing on his part, but if removing this Panther from the mix earned trust with Lord Tearson, William would have to come up with a plan that would keep the other man safe but lead the earl to believe he was gone.

He would have to worry about that later. For the time being, he had to concentrate on Lady. Earning her trust would be imperative.

The Prancing Pony was run by a woman known as Madam Esther. Though it had the outward appearance of a country inn for weary travelers, those who arrived without an invitation were told there were no vacancies and sent down the road to a more proper establishment.

The reason? The inn was a refuge for more sinister dealings. From the buying and selling of women to games of chance where the stakes could include the loss of a family’s fortune, it reeked of debauchery and self-indulgence.

Countless works of art, deeds to any number of lands, and all sorts of items passed through numerous hands. The accents heard within those walls encompassed every corner of the country while at the same time limited who was allowed inside.

With a full moon and clear skies lighting up the land, William looked at his pocket watch. It was nearing midnight, and he expected Lady to arrive soon.

How strange. He looked forward to seeing her more than he had first thought, and not for just what she could provide for him professionally.

As though on cue, she appeared on horseback, and William felt the desire ignite inside him. Meeting after dark did have its benefits, for her hair glowed in the moonlight, and her exposed skin beneath the green riding habit was flawless.

A boy ran out to meet her, taking the reins while she dismounted so he could take the horse to the stables. The child gave no indication that the mask she wore was out of place.

“Hello, Wolf,” she said in that same sultry voice he remembered from the party. “I do not think I am late, but if I am, I apologize.”

William fought the yearning inside him. There was work to do this night, and questions he needed answered. He did not have time for seduction.

“You are right on time,” he said, offering his arm. “Are you ready?”

She responded by placing her hand on his arm, and the two walked to the front door of the inn.

At the door stood a large fellow with massive arms and torso, a highwayman acting the guard.
